DIY Victorian Christmas Ornaments and Decorating Ideas

There are many inexpensive ways to decorate for Chrismtas that come to us from Victorian England, a time when Christmas celebrations became more family-centered.  Many decorations were made at home with materials available. Some that I like:  gilded walnuts (you can remove the nuts, glue the shell back together & paint gold or silver) and paper … [Read more...]

Easy DIY Garland Mini Christmas Tree

These are pretty cheap to make and easy.  You need a styrofoam tree form from a craft store.  You wrap it with wrapping paper, then wrap any garland around it using pins.  You might want to use part of a garland you already have.  Add tiny ornaments if you wish. This could be a nice gift for an elderly person who doesn't put up a tree anymore but … [Read more...]

Easy Christmas Decor Ideas

A few items got my attention in this slideshow.  You can use white "eyelash" yarn as a garland on your tree (or in other decorations).  For one tree they took cinnamon sticks and ivy (fake, I assume)  & sprayed it with gold paint and put them on the tree.  If you do this, consider that a light spray of gold (or silver) often looks nicer than … [Read more...]

My Favorite Things: Holiday Garland with Kids’ Handprints

I'm thinking this would be a fun holiday craft to do with the kids/grandkids.  Just trace their hand prints onto felt in colors for that particular holiday.  Then link them with a piece of ribbon.  Probably hot glue would show through the felt, so a few stiches with embroidery floss ought to hold the prints onto the ribbon.  You could also use … [Read more...]

I love this Santa!  You can make one to dress up a bottle of wine that you are gifting.  But I love it as a Christmas decoration too.  You can use any bottle for that & just fill it with dried split pears or unpopped popcorn or something to keep it steady.  You might already have some materials that you can use to make this.  This is a great gift … [Read more...]

Adorable Elf Stocking Ornaments to Make

You can make these from scraps of fabric & sew them up using embroidery floss and a blanket stitch.  So cute.  They'd be great package decorations also.  I could see a garland of these (attached to a length of red  ribbon) strung across the front of the fireplace mantel.  Or use some as curtain tie-backs.  Dangle some from a light fixture or in … [Read more...]
