|Special Occasion Dresses for Less|
How would you like to wear a designer dress for about $40? That’s rental fee. Nice, right? Especially if you go to more than one dressy occasion a year. Almost essential if you see a lot of the same people at these occasions. Here’s how.
My savvy daughter told me about this one. Go to Rent the Runway and join for free. You can rent any of the dresses, purses, and designer jewelry. When you sign up they often give you a coupon for $25 off your first rental, but it must be used during the first week after you join. You can order for use anytime within 6 months. They also give you a $50 coupon on your birthday, so plan accordingly! (Only one coupon allowed per purchase.) There are even some dresses that rent for as low as $50–the dress could cost you just tax plus shipping!
My daughter was able to rent a dress with the $50 off coupon, so her cost was just $40 for a dress that usually rents for $90 and sells for $150 retail. They send you two sizes of the same dress to make it likely that one of them will be a good fit. You get to keep the items for 4 days before returning them. You pay shipping–outside of New York City it’s $35. Return shipping is free and all you do is pop the item in the envelope provided and slip it into the nearest mailbox. Done!
The largest size seems to be 16, but you can still rent handbags and jewelry. For example, you can rent gorgeous Nicole Miller chandelier earrings that retail for around $100 for $15. They would be stunning for a bride. As long as she doesn’t lose them! If you lose an item or damage it, you will have to pay the full retail price. Perhaps a Kate Spade necklace won’t fall off as easily. You can rent it for $45 instead of paying the $248 it goes for in retail.
In reading reviews of particular items, I ran across one person who said the clutch they rented was a little worn on the edges and had a lipstick stain inside. Another person said the dress they rented did not come in time. Someone who rented a beige purse found what looked like spots of red wine on it. So you might have to have a back-up plan in place. Everything is supposed to be cleaned by the company, but it’s possible the handbags don’t get the same kind of cleaning.
You sometimes might be able to beat these prices at your local department store with a good sale, but I doubt you will get quite the impact of these rental dresses. My daughter is wearing one of their dresses for her wedding rehearsal dinner and she will definitely be gorgeous in it.
