Will you shop Black Friday? If so, you are a stronger person than I am. I avoid it like the plague, mainly because I have claustrophobia and am not fond of mayhem. Shopping online with a cup of coffee in hand is more my style. Cyber Monday (Monday after Thanksgiving with online deals) is good, but I buy online for Christmas gifts all year long. Good deals and less stress!
Workers are complaining about “Black Friday Creep” as more stores open on Thanksgiving Day. Target and other stores are opening around 8 or 9 pm for people who just can’t wait to start shopping. It is sad that some people have to leave their Thanksgiving family gatherings to be there for shoppers. It does seem kind of ironic that we give thanks for our blessings of health, the love of family, and the simple joys of life–and then rush out to buy, buy, buy! Some are calling this new shopping day of Thanksgiving “Gray Thursday.”
If you want to keep up with the Black Friday deals, the Black Friday forum at Fat Wallet is a good one. It’s free, and you can sign up for email deal alerts or summaries. They post deals 365 days a year and also list good Cyber Monday deals. I don’t visit the deal sites much any more because I tend to spend too much money on all those deals!
Even though I buy most of my gifts online, I do like the idea of Small Business Saturday. It’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The idea is to give business to your local stores and restaurants that are not part of a chain or franchise. You don’t have to do that just on that Saturday, but it’s supposed to encourage us to patronize our local business owners. There is a promotion from American Express for this day. You can get a credit of $25 on your bill and there are ways to get this rebate on more than one card. (Read comments at link.) Take a look at the list of businesses in your area that participate in this. You could get free gas or a free meal out of it.
Be aware that many of the “door-busters” (unfortunate choice of words) are items made just for Black Friday. So that great deal is probably for an item of lesser quality than you would get otherwise. Buyer beware & all that.
So will you brave the crowds? Do you enjoy shopping on Black Friday? What do you think about Black Friday Creep?
