With all of the high heat this summer, it’s really important to hydrate. Dehydration can cause a lot of problems, so prevent it by drinking plenty of water. Also try this recipe that is like many of the sports drinks you can buy to replace electrolytes. This one won’t taste exactly like Gator Ade, but it will do the job for much less money!
Basic Recipe for “Aligator Ade”
1 packet of fruit flavored powdered drink mix (like Kool-Aid) with no sugar added (I like the lemonade flavor)
1/4 tsp Morton Lite salt (includes potassium for the electrolytes)
1/4 tsp sea salt
heaping 1/2 cup sugar
2 quarts water
Mix well and serve. Some people used warm water to get the sugar and salts dissolved more easily and then refrigerated it all to chill.
Keep this recipe in mind for when anyone in the family participates in sports or when you go hiking, camping, etc. Also if someone is sick, this can start to replace fluids/electrolytes if they have been throwing up and/or having diarrhea.
Dehydration is especially dangerous in young children and in the elderly. Please check on the elderly during these hot days to be sure they are ok. Often the only sign that they are dehydrated is that they become confused and have big changes in behavior. It’s extremely important to notify their doctor if this is happening. It could save their life.
I found this recipe at Instructables where the comments offer more ideas for customizing it, including using all natural ingredients..
