The link has several ways to give some personality to a basic chest of drawers. If you don’t have an IKEA furniture store near you just look for a similar chest at a thrift shop.
I really like the black painted chests pictured here and the way they put 2 chests together for a buffet look. This works well in a dining room, living room, bedroom, heck just about any room. A painting or mirror on the wall above it would make it a focal point for the room. It could also be set up as a bar or a tv stand.
Strangely enough adding some black to a room anchors a room for a secure feeling yet adds drama. I think the black chests here really make a statement. Black semi-gloss paint should work well for this project.
One criticism of the pictured chests: the decor items on top are all about the same size. It would be more pleasing to the eye to have an odd number of items with different heights. Perhaps the horse with an almost flat bowl & a medium stack of books?
Click the title to link to ApartmentTherapy for other DIY styles for this chest. If you get tired of it one way you can always change it! I have no affiliation with IKEA.

Just wanted to add that you can paint the chest(s) any color. Some people like a white buffet look. Add granite or other stone tile to the top so you can place hot dishes there. That also dresses it up quite a bit for any art objects you place there between dinner parties. Very cheap and very cool.

Ha! Buck you got me smiling with that. Not an interior designer. Not Martha. I’ve had to learn to decorate/furnish my home on the cheap for many years. And I’ve read a fair amount about home decor. I just notice things now. I can’t help it! I’ll be smiling about this the rest of the night! lol Thanks!

$30 looks like a good deal. Are you an interior designer? Didn’t notice the objects were the same size until you pointed it out. What will I learn next? Are you actually Martha Stewart? 🙂

Miss T we like having an IKEA close, but it’s a bit of a maze to get through it–marketing I’m sure. Still it’s enjoyable. Glad you are getting one.

I have always liked the chest look too. We are getting in IKEA next year. I am quite excited.

I’m a huge fan of IKEA but I don’t stray beyond IKEA’s instructions!
I need to get creative!
