Do your high school kids want a job to earn extra money?
Are you concerned about them working on school nights? Are you worried it will hurt their grades?
Here’s a solution that could work for you: tutoring!
Your high schooler is probably good at some subjects. Why not let them tutor other students who need help? While your teen works with another student they are actually learning the subject matter even better. It’s called over-learning and kicks in during tests when stress otherwise often erases facts and methods learned earlier. In order to explain something you have to think it through. It’s the focus and putting it into your own words that makes it easier to remember. All the while your teen collects money for tutoring.
If your teen doesn’t feel skilled enough to teach high school subjects he/she can always tutor younger students. They often need help too. Tutoring rates will vary by subject and where you live, but the linked article says you can charge $10-20 an hour. Not too bad for part-time work and you don’t have to carry huge pots of hot grease out of a restaurant!
Just be sure your teen does not tutor so much on week nights that they neglect their own homework. When your teen fills out those college applications be sure they list this as a real job. In college they can continue tutoring for extra income!
