Lately it seems every store has continual sales. But in August you will still find extra good deals on the following items in most parts of the US. If you need them, it’s a good time to buy.
You might find good prices on computers and laptops because they are trying to make room for the new models. There are often computer sales for kids going to college in August (and in September too). Check at least 3 stores to find your best deal. Of course you don’t have to be a college student to get these deals. Another option is to buy a refurbished computer, especially for kids and beginning college students. Click on the label “save on computers” below this post to see more about that. You could save quite a bit!
Also in the back-to-college sales are bed linens and organizers/storage containers. Department stores often have deep sales on bedding at this time. Sheet sets and storage containers come in handy for lots of us even if we are not in college.
You probably know that stores put their barbeque grills on sale this time of year, but wait for a good sale. We saw some today, Aug. 2nd, that were just $50 lower from their $400 original price. Wait till later in the month to get better discounts. Some could be as much as 65% off, so waiting is smart. Stores are trying to clear out grills, lawnmowers, and outdoor toys which take up a lot of space in the stores.
Camping equipment starts to go on sale in August, but the deals get better as time goes on. You might find the best deals in October when they are desperate to get rid of items. If there’s something you really need, keep checking the stores to see how many are left of that item. When supples get low it’s time to pounce on the deal. You might be able to talk the price down further when it’s the last one on the shelf. Then again, it might be gone when you come for that last item!
We recently bought a new cooler that is a better insulator than the one we’ve used for 25 years. It’s supposed to keep food cold for 5 days. I don’t know how they calculate that, but we use half the amount of ice we did with the old cooler. Since we use our cooler a lot, it should pay for itself within 2 years. Also it can be pulled like luggage with a handle. That’s good for us as we get older. If you find one of these on sale it could be a smart purchase. The one we got is made by Coleman (no affiliation).
If you are looking for a new car, it’s better to wait until September to get your best deal. From the linked article: “It’s [September] the sweet spot between two years’ inventory. Watch a car you like on the lot, come in later to make an offer.” August is a good time to research cars online so that you know exactly which model you want to shop for in September. Find out about miles per gallon, average cost of owning, types of common repairs for models you are considering. I like Edmunds.com for that kind of information.
If your kids (or you) need new jeans you will usually get your best deal in October. If you can’t wait until then consider buying just one pair now & add to it in October. Mark your calendar so you won’t forget!

As always, it’s not a good deal for you if you don’t need it. But if you need these items you might as well be smart about it! Happy deal hunting!
