Want a relaxing vacation by a beautiful lake?
It’s a perfect way to make great memories with the family!
Here are some wonderful lake towns with plenty of charm. You can fish, swim, run on the beach, snooze on the beach, explore the local attractions, or take a relaxing walk. Build sand castles and skip rocks on the water. Rent a kayak, canoe or paddle boat for the afternoon and get out on the lake!
Most of these places won’t be as crowded as beaches on the coasts and have a slower pace to really unwind all of your stress.
I have been to Bemidji, Minnesota many times and agree it’s a great place for a family vacation. You can catch walleye, the delicacy of northern Minnesota, but in general the fishing is good for all types of fish. Tip: buy some leeches at a bait shop for the best fishing. They are good for the “ewwww” factor too. Our son once caught a rock with a leech! That sucker was holding onto a fair sized rock!
At Bemidji be sure to take the kids to Morrell’s Trading Post, a kitschy souvenir shop that’s been there for generations. Take photos of the kids standing by the huge Paul Bunyan statue (and Babe, his blue ox) by the lake in downtown not far from Morrell’s. Americana at its best! For souvenirs pick up some of the wild rice that’s grown locally by Native Americans. It’s yummy & makes a great gourmet gift. You can find artisan quality items that are locally made in a couple of shops in the downtown area also. You won’t find trendy restaurants in the area, but family-friendly restaurants are plentiful.
A nice side trip about an hour’s drive from Bemidji is Lake Itasca which contains the official headwaters of the Mississippi River. The whole family can tiptoe across the rocks where the Mississippi is just a trickle. Take photos of that so the kids can show their friends how they walked across the Mississippi River this summer. Actually, Lake Bemidji is just a wide spot in the Mississipppi. Fortunately it’s pretty clear that far north.
