There are not many places you can still get free checking. Of the top 50 credit unions 38 credit unions still offer it.
We don’t use checks that much anymore as we pay almost all our bills online automatically. Not only is it cheaper, it takes away the worry about getting bills paid on time.
It could be worth your time to call around (or look online) to see if any credit unions in your area offer free checking. We have free checking at our credit union, which is a rather small credit union. We do have to pay for our checks, but we save on that by ordering them ouselves from a company we found online. Our credit union is fine with that. We paid $8 for slightly less than the number of checks that the credit union wanted about $30 for. Even Walmart (no affiliation) now sells checks online starting at $6–just google Walmart checks.
