These seven foods can last quite a few years if stored properly. With prices going up, it could help your budget to stock up on these soon.
The foods: canned fruits and vegetables (store ones you use), canned beans or dried beans, dried fruit, wheat and/or flour.
I usually buy a large bag of regular flour at Sam’s Club about once a year. I repackage it into large plastic jars that used to have pretzels in them (available at Sam’s and Walmart) and then put them one at a time in the freezer for a few days. That kills any insect eggs–yes they are always there. Then I store the flour on a shelf in the basement until I need it. It keeps at least a year that way. If you have room to keep some in your freezer it will keep even longer. I prefer to keep meat (bought on sale) in the freezer since it’s a higher value item.
We also buy rice in bulk from Sam’s. I store it in the same type of plastic jars, but I just put a couple of bay leaves (found in the spice section at the store) in each jar. That keeps out any bugs & we’ve been able to keep rice like this for years even when not stored in a cool place. Brown rice has more natual oil in it, so it should be stored in the fridge or freezer to last a long time. Otherwise it will get rancid.
We don’t store that many canned goods as we prefer frozen or fresh produce. We get less salt and sugar that way.
I do like to store dark chocolate in the freezer as those prices keep going up. After all it’s a health food!
