I’m resurrecting this post from the archives since you are likely to find popcorn in the tins leftover from Christmas now. They make terrific airtight storage containers for very little money.
The big metal containers that popcorn comes in, often around the holidays, are great for storing rice. The tins are decorated to go with the current holiday, but sometimes they are more generic. They come with 3 flavors of popcorn, regular, cheese, and caramel. We like the popcorn, but I’m sure it’s terrible for the diet. My own air-popped popcorn is much healthier. But I love the tins for storage.
Wash out the tin with liquid dish soap & water. Dry well & maybe keep the lid off for a day or so to get all the moisture out. Then you can put dry rice in it with a few bay leaves to keep the critters out. The lid fits so tightly you don’t need to do anything else. We buy rice in bulk at Sam’a Club & use 2 or 3 popcorn tins to store it in.
If you buy rice now, you lock in today’s low prices. You could store dry beans in them too, but they do fine in plastic containers.
So maybe a movie night with family/friends and lots of popcorn is in order!
