Who could resist these rolls sitting in their little jars at each place setting? These dinner rolls are baked in small canning jars for a unique way to serve rolls! You can’t use regular jars because they can’t take the heat of the oven & would explode. You don’t want that kind of mess to clean up.
You can do this with other dinner roll recipes, but this one is for healthy whole wheat rolls. The link is a good one to bookmark because of all the great tips on working with whole wheat bread dough.
If you have a bread machine you can have it make the dough for you before you put it in the jars. Just take it out of the machine before the rising begins. Put it in a big bowl that has been oiled & put it in a warm place (a gas oven that’s not turned on works well) with a light weight dishcloth over the top of the bowl. When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down & put it in the individual canning jars (smallest size) to rise again (doubling in size again) in a warm place. Then take the jars out of the oven if that’s where they were rising. Preheat the oven & when it’s the proper temperature you can put the jars back in. Follow the directions in the linked recipe for that.
