You know those small quilts that hotels put across the foot of beds? I think they are really attractive with all the colors and patterns.
They are super simple to sew. Look for remnants of luxurious fabrics and decorator fabrics that are often on sale at the fabric stores.
Most would be very easy to sew as they are made from 3 or 4 large rectangles or strips of different fabrics . Just choose ones that give the look you want, sew them into a long rectangle that covers the width of the bed with enough to hang over the sides about 12 to 18 inches. The overall width of the quilt is usually about 3 feet, but you can make it as you like. This size quilt will be easy to wash in the washing machine too.
These small quilts are meant to keep your feet a little warmer & are nice color accents for the bed and room. You will need to add some quilt batting sandwiched between the pieced top and a solid bottom. Then sew on a binding around all the edges. You could make your own binding or use a wide bias strip binding available at fabric stores. Often the same binding is sewn over the top of the seams where the rectangles meet as an accent trim.
You can do some machine quilting however you like in the middle of this quilt. You could also do hand quilting, but it will take longer. The quilting thread can be a coordinating thread or a contrasting thread, whatever you like.
Have fun with this. You can use fabric your already have, or buy new. You can even use fabrics from old curtains or clothing if it is in good condition. If you have enough fabric you can make a few coordinating pillows for the bed.
This is a contemporary look, but with smaller pieces it can be more of a country look. I think it’s a very cheerful look and so easy to do. Could be a nice gift if you know someone’s taste. Might even look good in team colors.
For an even quicker project make it smaller to be a table runner. Again, nice gift, possibly with a holiday theme.
