The most important thing to do is shop around. You can phone insurance agents/companies or contact them online. How many should you contact? I’d say at least 3, but more is better. My dh recently checked with 10 different companies to get a new furnace/AC in our house. I thought that was excessive, but we paid about $3000 less than the highest bid. The offer we chose was from the last contractor he talked to. And we got the best equipment from a dealer with a great reputation who had been in business the longest. We’re very pleased.
Information from the linked article about getting discounts:
“Do you not drive that many miles, have a squeaky-clean record and have taken a defensive driving class? Some insurance companies will give you discounts for having a good driving history, which will translate into cheaper car insurance. Before you go with an insurance company, check out what discounts it offers. Installing an anti-theft device, antilock brakes and air bags in the car are some things insurance companies will highlight for a discount.”
Some car insurance policies will give you a discount if you watch a defensive driving video at their office (usually takes about 30 minutes) and/or if you have good grades in school. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
Be sure to keep good notes when comparing the companies, including their phone numbers, address, and website url.
