This is a little late for the start of the college semester, but hopefully some of you can keep it in mind for when your kids start college. I know kids want to have a state of the art, cutting edge laptop for college, but guess which ones get stolen the most?
Much better to get either a low-end laptop that will do the job or do as this author says: buy a used computer. You save money and it’s much less likely to be stolen. Unfortunately things get stolen in dorms and libraries all the time.
Textbooks are stolen most often because they are easy to sell. So warn your students to keep their dorm doors locked at all times & to hide the books as much as possible. They should never walk away from their bookbag (even in the library or to go to the bathroom) or leave it in the classroom while they go to the lab for the rest of the period. It will disappear. Another reason to have a basic backpack that does the job but is nothing anyone would want to steal. Same reasoning on bicycles brought to campus–have a clunker that almost no one would want. An expensive bike? No way.
Even laundry is stolen from the washers and dryers in the dorms. As boring as it is, students need to stay with their laundry. They can read for class or socialize, but they better stay in the laundry area if they don’t want their clothes stolen. It happened to me way back in the late 1960’s.
