We enjoy being near water in the summer, and taking a trip to a lake town can be fun for the whole family. Often these small towns have been tourist destinations for decades–and for good reason. You can’t beat the scenery, the recreation, the small town restaurants and shops, and the relaxing pace of life by the water.
One of the towns in the linked slide show is Frisco, Colorado. We spent 2 weeks there back in the 1990’s & loved it. It is very near to the ski areas (Breckenridge & 2 others), so summer is the “off season.” We rented a 3 bedroom condo for less than the price of a single motel room (near the Rocky Mountain National Park) at a run-down motel. We booked the condo through a rental agent in Frisco, but nowdays you probably can go throught VRBO.com to find deals.
We had a hot tub on the deck facing the mountains and the lake. The kitchen was big & we cooked our meals quite often to save money & eat healthy. Our family likes to hike, so we hiked many trails in the area, including some in the mountains. The breathtaking scenery along with the great experiences we had on the trails made many favorite memories for our family.
Frisco is at 10,000 feet elevation, so we had to take it easy the first week while we got used to the altitude. We had a few bouts of “altitude sickness” that felt like a mild flu the first week. The second week we were ready to hike a lot more.
If you have a lake near you it works as a nice weekend trip too.
