I want to share my husband’s method to keep those watering part of the bills down to almost zero.
Every spring, my husband waits for the forsythia bush to drop its last flowers. Right after that is the perfect time for him to give the lawn its one and only treatment for the whole year. He spreads Halt’s Pre-Emergent Crab Grass Killer and Feed on the lawn. It works best on a dry lawn & so the spreader doesn’t get wet. I have no financial connection to Halt’s, and I’m sure there are other brands that do the same thing.
Our lawn is green & beautiful Spring into Fall with no further treatments and zero watering. Of course we do not live in a climate with extreme heat or extreme drought. Also we have an established lawn; you’d have to do a lot more with a new lawn.

Ever see lawns that look scalped? They might be going for a putting green look, but they end up having to water the grass quite often to keep it from dying out.
Another advantage for out lawn: he uses a mulching mower so the grass clippings go back into the yard. Those clipping act as a fine mulch that helps retain water in the lawn too. It does not create a thatch problem that so many people worry about. There are no clumps to prevent sun getting to the grass. And there are no bags of grass to deal with!
This is a very simple, less work method that saves you money. You will also have the most beautiful lawn in the neighborhood. We’ve seen it work every time!
