With the popularity of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland movie it seems a good time to revisit the yard game of croquet.
You can play regular croquet or set up a crazy course more like a miniature golf course. The linked Instructable has some great ideas for such a course, and you will probably have more ideas.
You might find a used croquet set at a garage sale, etc. Or ask around if anyone has an old one they’d let you borrow for the party described below.
You could have an Alice in Wonderland themed party with the crazy croquet game as part of it. Set up a table outdoors to mimic the Mad Hatter’s tea party. Set the table with mismatched tea cups, etc. (GoodWill) and spike the “tea” if you know your guests expect adult beverages. How about rum & Coke, Pepsi & vodka, dirty martinis, or a fruity sangria? You could make it a potluck by asking people to bring something that looks a little crazy, but tastes good. Could be interesting. This is a good time to use clashing tablecloths & orphan napkins.
Give a prize to anyone who comes in Alice In Wonderland costume. A deck of of cards or a “white rabbit”? Stuffed animal rabbits should be available around Easter & after. Take pictures! Quote lines from the movie/book–“Off with her head!” while playing croquet.
A deck of playing cards and/or chess boards/pieces could be used in various ways for decor. How about a cake decorated like a large playing card? Or the Mad Hatter’s hat? If it’s a kids’ party they can make their own crazy party hats–take pictures. You could show the Disney movie of Alice in Wonderland for them towards the end of the party to help everyone relax until it’s time for them to be picked up. The movie has been re-released for home video.
The mismatched tea cups can be souvenirs/favors for the guests to take home along with a baggie of soil and some herb seeds or sunflower seeds to plant in the cup.
Even without a party, playing croquet is a great activity for getting some sunshine & fresh air. It’s even more fun if the players help in setting up the wacky course.
