|El Capitain, Quadalupe Mts. NP|
We love this park in west Texas and have been there several times. It’s close to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, so one day in each place works well. You can camp at the park or stay at a hotel near Carlsbad. Both areas provide cooler temperatures on hot summer days.
Be sure to stop in the town of Marfa, TX on your way. It’s a wonderful town. We loved eating at the pizza place housed in an old gas station. The pizza was great & you could watch traffic from the outdoor eating area. It’s not exactly the kind of place where there are signs everywhere for the tourists. You have to know where to look for things & ask around a bit too. It just adds to the charm of the place.
Click here for a fun article about Marfa at the Chicago Tribune. They call Marfa quirky and artsy and I have to agree. Marfa is just a fun place. They even have the “Marfa Lights” that some people believe are from extra-terrestials. They filmed “Giant” with James Dean there. It’s one of my favorite films.

Click here for my review of Guadalupe Mountains Nationl Park. It’s a wonderful place for family hiking. There are over 80 trails in the park; we choose the easiest ones. More experienced hikers can go for tougher trails including a 6 hour ascent to the top of El Capitain. Not for me.
Take lots of photos and make some memories!
