What can you do when it’s so darn hot outside that you just want to stay inside? You can read a book, take up a hobby, organize your photos, and play a board game with your family. An activity that most people don’t think of is cleaning and organizing. There are actually hidden rewards to that road! I’m one who hates to clean, so you know there are real rewards if I’m saying it.
I was remembering what we used to do as kids about this time every summer. We were getting bored with all our usual summer fun. So she’d announce one morning that it was “cleaning out your drawers day!” We’d groan, but get started because we knew there was no getting out of it. Either that, or we weren’t very creative! haha
We’d start by emptying out a drawer at a time on our bed. (Yes, we had to keep our beds made up every day.) Mom wanted us to line the drawer with fresh newspaper. We didn’t seem to get newsprint on our clothes, but I wouldn’t use it now. So if we’d been complaining too much about this chore, she’d point out the date of the old newspaper lining the drawer already. That was pretty hilarious when some of the newspapers were older than a year before. Mom always won the argument that way–that it was a chore much overdue.
We’d dust out the drawer, put down the day’s newspaper, and then refold all the clothes that had been in there. The piles of nicely folded clothes did look really nice. Mission accomplished! It did take us most of an afternoon, but it really wasn’t hard work. Lying down on the clean bed with a good book after that was pure luxury. Of course the next day’s assignment was to try on all the clothes in our closets to see what still fit and what didn’t. That was a pretty hilarious fashion show.
I’ve been thinking how wise Mom was. Not only did we get things more organized, but it was the perfect opportunity to weed out items that didn’t fit or were worn out. Then Mom could decide what new items we’d need to get for the coming school year. Smart.
Every so often I decide to take on a closet in this same spirit of organization. It’s a good time for me to assess what I might need in the way of clothes for the coming season. When I find things I’d forgotten about, it’s almost like Christmas. I even find gifts I’d squirreled away but forgotten. That helps with the Christmas list I keep all year round.
Even though the heat might be oppressive where you are, think about taking on a little organizing. It’s very satisfying, even if you only tackle a drawer at a time. It you can get your kids involved, you have my respect. I used to have our kids work on their rooms in the summertime, but they were very inefficient at it! They were well occupied though. Think about it.
